While the 36 hours of free travel on public transport at each Euro 2024 match will get you a fair distance out of town on each occasion, the respective regional transport networks don't all join up, so you can't travel that way all around the 10 venues.
That got me thinking: if you buy a Deutschlandticket for just €49 for a calendar month, how long would it take you to travel around the 10 host cities - given that the ticket doesn't cover use of express trains. The answer is: not that long!
Here's my example (please feel free to come up with an even shorter journey time - leaving at least 5 minutes for changing trains).
DAY 1
Berlin > Leipzig
04:14 - 06.56; 1 change; 2 hrs 42 mins
08:09 - 14:54; 1 change; 6 hrs 45 mins
15:52 - 19:16; 2 changes; 3 hrs 24 mins
20:32 - 23:45; 2 changes; 3 hrs 13 mins
00:29 - 07.28; 2 changes; 6 hrs 59 mins
07:35 - 08:05; no changes; 30 mins
08:45 - 09:28; no changes; 43 minutes
09:59 - 10:26; no changes; 27 mins
10:35 - 15:35; 4 changes; 5 hrs
15:57 - 19:59; 3 changes; 4 hrs 2 mins
So, starting out at 04:14 on day 1 in Berlin and getting back at 19:59 on day 2 is 15 minutes short of 40 hours - to visit all 10 Euro 2024 host cities... for the princely sum of just €49 (with 29 more days of free nationwide travel to go)!
